PALM SUNDAY – SUNDAY OF THE PASSION

APRIL 9, 2017

PROCESSIONAL GOSPEL

P:  The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the twenty-first chapter.

C:  (spoken) Glory to you, O Lord.

P: As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find donkey tied there, with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you say that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away.”  This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet:

C: “Say to Daughter Zion, ‘See, your king comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’”

P:  The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. They brought the donkey and the colt and placed their cloaks on them for Jesus to sit on. A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted,

C:  “Hosanna to the Son of David!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”

“Hosanna in the highest heaven!”

P:  When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked,

C: “Who is this?”

P:  The crowds answered,

C:  “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.”

P:  This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C:  Praise to You, O Christ.

P:  Let us go forth in peace,

C:  In the name of the Lord.

PASSION NARRATIVE READ FROM “THE STORY”

Hymn: LSB 440 – “Jesus, I Will Ponder Now” Verse 1

Jesus, I will ponder now on Your holy passion;

with Your Spirit me endow for such meditation.

Grant that I in love and faith may the image cherish

of your suffering pain and death that I may not perish.

I – The Meal

Hymn: LSB 440 – “Jesus, I Will Ponder Now” Verse 2

Make me see Your great distress, anguish, and affliction,

Bonds and stripes and wretchedness and Your crucifixion;

Make me see how scourge and rod, spear and nails did wound You,

How for them You died, O God, who with thorns had crowned You.

II – The Farewell

Hymn: LSB 440 – “Jesus, I Will Ponder Now” Verse 3

Yet, O Lord, not thus alone make me see Your passion,

But its cause to me make known and Its termination.

Ah! I also and my sin wrought Your deep affliction;

This indeed the cause has been of Your crucifixion.

III – The Garden

Hymn: LSB 440 – “Jesus, I Will Ponder Now” Verse 4

Grant that I Your passion view with repentant grieving.

Let me not bring shame to You by unholy living.

How could I refuse to shun ev’ry sinful pleasure

Since for me God’s only Son suffered without measure.

IV – The Palace of the High Priest

Hymn: LSB 440 – “Jesus, I Will Ponder Now” Verse 5

If my sins give me alarm and my conscience grieve me,

Let your cross my fear disarm; peace of conscience give me.

Help me see forgiveness won by Your holy passion.

If for me He slays His Son, God must have compassion!

V – The Praetorium

Hymn: LSB 440 – “Jesus, I Will Ponder Now” Verse 6

Graciously my faith renew; help me bear my crosses,

Learning humbleness from You, peace mid pain and losses.

May I give You love for love!  Hear me, O my Savior,

That I may in heav’n above sing Your praise forever.

VI – The Crucifixion (The Congregation Stands)

(Silence for a time)

VII – The Temple Curtain
